The 5 Best Free Baby Quilt Patterns for Beginners

Updated: Aug 22

Hey, Everyone!

This week, I'm working on a quilt utilizing one of my favorite free patterns that I found on the internet years ago! It's too good not to share, even for beginner sewists. Below is a list of my top five favorite baby quilt patterns. And the best part? They're all free! While these are all wonderful and easy, I am saving my favorite for last! Let's do it!

While this pattern does include curved piecing, it's easily explained and not difficult at all! I made this for my niece's second-born son (read the blog post here) as they went with a whale theme. I used a raw edge applique method to include his name and a little whale too! Long ago, I found a little trick about matching fabric that I wanted to share with you (click here to read more).

Fabric Color Matching Tip: Look along the selvage of the fabric you'd like to match. It includes color swatches of what's included in that fabric! Use that to perfectly match solid fabrics. This helped a lot while making this quilt to decide which blues on the front would best match the colors in the backing fabric.

This quilt pattern will forever be one of my favorites because it's the pattern I used when our youngest, Cam was born! He's pretty cute. The pattern is so verstile! You can use any combination of colors or patterned backing fabric and it would still be adorable.

The color-matching tip mentioned above really helped me with this one, too. I included his initals and an airplane embroidery on the front. Listed below are the embroidery and fabric used in this quilt. He still loves his quilt, three years later!

This was truly a one day quilt! The pattern is super simple and comes together very quickly. It's also fat quarter friendly and potentially scrap busting! I wanted to make a different type of design for a baby girl, so I went with pink dinosaur fabric. It turned out so adorable. Find the full blog post on it here that I created.

I am going to shamelessly include my own tutorial in here! I create multiple baby name quilts each week. Just based off of how many are purchased from Etsy each month, I know they're popular! Basically, I am using a solid color front and patterned backing. The same backing is used with HeatnBond lite to make the name. Read the full blog post (and YouTube video) about how to create this super easy quilt! They're so versitle too.

Last and certainly not least, my all time favorite baby quilt to make! This is a complete in-depth tutorial. I love that it uses charm packs and the design options are unlimited! Over the years, I began personalizing the lattice quilt. Find a tutorial on how to do that here.

I hope this post has been helpful if you're looking to create a baby quilt! Do you have another pattern you love that isn't mentioned?? Let me know below!

Until next time...

-Ashley
