Happy Friday!
If you have been in the market for a new sewing machine, whether it be for yourself or as a gift for someone else...I'm here to help! The FEIYU company recently reached out to me and offered this machine in exchange for my honest opinion on it. As someone that regularly sews with a heavy duty machine, I was completed intrigued by the opportunity, especially considering the machine's price point! Below, I'm detailing the pros, cons, and everything in between.
Pros:
There were four features that really stood out to me...but I'm weird so you may pick out different things when you use this machine!
My Favorite Key Features:
Compact & Easy to Set Up
Automatic Needle Threader
Inexpensive Price
Heavy Duty Capabilities
Compact & Easy to Set Up: After first opening the box, I loved the small design. One of the downfalls of your typical heavy duty machine is the space that it can take up...however, this machine is relatively small (14.5" wide and 10.5" tall). It is also pretty easy to set up, even if you're a complete beginner. The instruction manual is easy to read and follow. I had everything set up and ready to sew in maybe 30 minutes.
Automatic Needle Threader: I am a sucker for a needle threader. Especially if you change thread colors often, like I do. On my current machine, my needle threader broke years ago and I miss it every single day. This needle threader works great, making color changing super quick!
Inexpensive Price: At just $159, this machine is very inexpensive considering all of the great features, small design, and capabilities! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know we’ve got five sweet babies and always try to save where we can. I really appreciate that this machine is an affordable option for those looking to sew a ride array of things. It's also available on Amazon Prime and can be delivered in a matter of days.
Heavy Duty Capabilities: You know that I love making bags (think cosmetic bags, totes, and even backpacks), quilts, and various projects around the house. When I saw that this sewing machine was advertised as 'heavy duty' at an affordable price, I was more than intrigued and couldn't wait to test it out! I had some leftover Belgian Linen from Spoonflower at 9.8 oz and used this to see just how many layers I could get through. I was beyond stunned to see it got through 8 layers without changing out the needle that it came with!! And at that point, it just sounded like it was working a little harder...it didn't even get hung up. I have full confidence that I could use this machine to sew bags or any other projects that I need to.
Cons:
Funny thing is...I wouldn't even really consider these 'cons' because there are ways around the small issues that I had!
Quilting is something that I do nearly every day. The only con that I could see with this machine was that it did not come with feet to quilt (walking foot and free motion foot). However, it's hard to even consider this a con because a quick search on Amazon showed there are SO many extension tables available that would be compatible with this machine, as well as free motion and walking feet. You do have the ability to drop the feed dogs on the machine, so quilting and free motion quilting is definitely an option! You'll just have to purchase a couple of things separately. An extension table is handy when you're creating bigger quilts as it gives you more room to move things around underneath the machine. You can definitely piece and bind your quilt with ease, especially considering the machine's ability to handle bulk. Overall though, that wouldn't deter me from purchasing this sewing machine by any means!
The only other thing worth mentioning, because this is an honest review, is the pedal speed. This sewing machine only has one speed, which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all! If you are experienced with a sewing machine, this may trip you up at first, but it's easy to adjust to. If you're brand new and this would be your first sewing machine, forget I mentioned anything and enjoy!
At the end of the day, I would recommend this sewing machine to both beginners and more experienced sewists. It’s reliable, beginner-friendly, and surprisingly capable for heavier projects. If you’re just starting out or need something affordable and versatile, this is definitely worth considering. I hope this review helped to guide your purchase decision a little!
If this sewing machine sounds like something you need...you can find it on Amazon here or from their website.
